A storage shed adds much needed space to your home or business and gives you the opportunity to truly get organised. It’s easy to get excited about how much you plan to fit in your shed, but without careful planning you may find it’s just another haven for clutter.

Even with a big storage shed, it pays to think about how you are going to organise things in an efficient and space saving way! The more organised you are, the more you can fit into your shed, freeing up valuable space in your home or office.

1. Plan a walkway through your storage shed

It’s tempting to fill all available floor space with boxes or household items, but don’t forget to make a walkway for yourself to ensure that items are easily accessible. There is nothing worse than having to move things around just to get to the one thing you need. Every time you rearrange the space in a rush, you’re making things a little less organised. Before you know it, you can’t remember where anything is anymore!

2. Use clear plastic tubs

Clear plastic tubs are stackable and allow you to see their contents. Labelling them will also help provide access at a glance. Have the labels facing out and don’t put anything in front of the tubs or labels.

3. Use shelving

If you need to store shop shelving or bookcases, make use of them by loading stackable tubs onto the shelves. This is another trick for easy access, allowing you to put a few boxes at eye level rather than all stacked on top of each other.

4. Make an inventory

Write a list of everything that is in the shed. Categorise the list according to rooms of the house (like Kitchen or Laundry) or aspects of your business (like Tax Files or Old Stock). This way when you need something, you can check that it’s in your shed before you go looking in your home, or worse, buying a new one!

5. Dismantle Furniture

It can seem like a hassle, but dismantling furniture keeps it from being damaged and can be a huge space saver. Remove panels and slats to pull apart bed frames or dismantle chairs or other pieces of furniture that can take up a lot of space.

6. Use wardrobes or vacuum seal bags

If you are storing clothes, use wardrobes to hang them in or put them into vacuum seal bags. Not only does this save space, but it also protects them from any possible mould or dust build up. This can also be a handy way to store breakables, framed photos or artworks.

A storage shed goes a long way towards helping you get control of a crowded house, a relocation or a home business, just to mention a few. But the key to storage success is having a good plan and an access system that leaves nothing to chance.
