How to Get Rid of Pests in Self Storage

Pests are a big inconvenience to all self storage facilities. They can diminish the cleanliness and security of the facility, and even cause considerable damage to your stored belongings. Rodents, termites, cockroaches and spiders all threaten your stored belongings. With a well maintained self storage unit, this should not be an issue.

However, if it does become apparent that there are pests in your self storage facility, then you must take action. But what exactly can you do about it? There are many approaches that you can take to eradicate pests in your self storage unit. How to get rid of pests will depend on the extent and nature of pest activity in your unit.

First Identify the Pests

The first thing you need to do, if pests are an issue, is identify them. You will need clear evidence of pest activity to determine which variety of pest has invaded your storage unit. To do this, there are several things you can do. Normally, certain pests leave traces of their activity that are distinct to them. For example rat droppings are quite easily identifiable as opposed to insect droppings, which are much smaller. Likewise, termites leave behind a characteristic trail of ‘termite dirt,’ which is in fact broken down timber that they have excreted. Once you have identified the species of pest that is present, you can take a targeted approach to eradicating it. It is also a good idea to notify your self storage providers. This will allow them to take steps in managing the presence of pests throughout the facility.

Try a Range of Techniques

There are many pest control techniques that you may employ to manage your pest issues. It is important to remember that these are relatively basic. More advanced methods that employ harsh chemicals are better left to professionals.

Remember, prevention is better than a cure

Before you think about treating pests, you should think about how you can prevent them in the future. Taking small precautions is invariably easier than eradicating pests that have already established themselves. As well as this, prevention will eliminate the risk of damage to your belongings. Some common methods of pest prevention include simple things like laying mothballs and sealing up obvious holes that might allow the entry of rodents.

You can try traps

If you have identified the presence of pests, you might want to consider setting traps. This is particularly effective for rodents, and it can have a tangible effect on their presence. However, setting traps is not something that you can leave for prolonged periods of time. If you set a rodent trap in your self storage unit, you have to check that trap at least once a day. This is a matter of hygiene, as deceased rodents must be dealt with swiftly. Again, you should notify your self storage provider of the issue, and ensure that your activities do not contravene your agreement.

Many people favour baits

For smaller pests – such as cockroaches, spiders and moths – baits are an effective method of eradication. This is a relatively low maintenance approach and it has proven itself to reduce the presence of smaller pests. It can also give you a sense of exactly how prevalent the issue is. As the roaches or insects die, you will be able to take note of their numbers, as well as the areas in which their presence is concentrated. With this information, you can work out how to limit their presence in the future, by applying targeted preventative measures. When done correctly, baiting can eradicate smaller pests from your self storage units and protect your possessions from the damage they cause.
