How to pack a Self Storage Unit

If you visit a self storage facility and look in every unit, you will probably see many different approaches to packing. Some of these are more effective than others. Packing your goods well is important for the longevity of your possessions, your convenience and even your safety. As well as this, a well-packed self storage unit will yield more space and therefore offer better value for money. But packing your self storage unit well is often easier said than done. Fortunately, there are a few basic rules you can follow to make the most of your self storage unit.

Never stack things above shoulder height

This is the golden rule of self storage packing. Under no circumstances should you pack items above your shoulder height. The risk of injury to your, or anyone who visits your unit, it multiplied the higher you stack your belongings. Whether the injury is a result of challenging lifting conditions, or falling items, you can minimise the risks by keeping your stacks low. Start with heavy, solid items on the bottom and stack increasingly lighter items as you go. This will make it easier and safer for you to retrieve your things in the future. Another thing to avoid is stacking items on sloped or uneven surfaces. To find flat, solid items to form the base of your stacks and enjoy a low risk storage environment.

Think about how easily you can access your belongings

Self storage is centred on creating space in your home or office, while keeping your things accessible. Packing your self storage unit well is a central tenant of achieving this. However that is not the only thing to keep in mind. The conditions of a self storage unit do differ to those of your home or office space. As a result, you also need to ensure that your belongings are well packed, to avoid deterioration over time.

Pack frequently used items towards the front and on top

Undoubtedly, there will be some items in your self storage unit that you need to access more than others. To make it easy for yourself in the future, you should pack your storage unit with this in mind. Begins the packing process by neatly and safely stacking the belongings that you will only require infrequently. Then, you can begin packing items according to how often they are used. Your final stack – nearest to the exit – should consist of the items that you need quite frequently. This will save you having to unpack your entire unit just to access one thing.

Try not to let delicate items touch the ground

There are some items that should spend as little time on the ground as possible. Some examples of such items include mattresses and cushions. These types of things can easily absorb moisture and become mouldy. Similarly, they can become overrun with dust. Fortunately, you can avoid these issues with ease. Simply cover the mattress or cushion with an appropriate sleeve – for example plastic – and place them on top of a stable surface above the ground. This mightn’t work with mattresses if space is at a premium, but that doesn’t matter because you can simply minimise your mattress’s contact with the ground by leaning it vertically. But always make sure that it is safe to do so.

Don’t lean or stack heavy things

Finally, don’t lean or stack heavy items. Things such as heavy metal rods, large lamps or heavy boxes should all be stored safely on the ground. Leaning them against other items not only risks your safety, but also has the capacity to damage your other items. By following these basic steps, you can enjoy an organised, accessible and convenient self storage unit.
