How To Store Handbags

If you’re somebody with an unquenchable desire for handbags, and your wardrobe is starting to look like its own Myer department, you might be wondering how best to store your ever-growing collection.

In this article, we’ll explore some popular ideas on how to store handbags. These recommendations will ensure that your handbags remain in top condition, and are easily accessible when you’re getting ready to go out.

Don’t use hooks

If you’ve already been on the lookout for bag storage ideas, you’ll probably come across some products that use hooks, which aren’t the best idea because handbag straps will eventually bend and crack after being hung for too long. Unless you want your expensive Gucci bag to be ruined after a year of hanging, steer clear of handbag storage that uses hooks. The best solutions are those that allow your bags to sit upright on flat surfaces, such as bag racks or shelves.

Bag rack + shelf dividers

Bag racks combined with shelf dividers are a great way to store handbags. Each handbag can stand upright in its space, which helps it to retain its shape over long periods. They’ll also be safely separated from your other bags, preventing them from rubbing against each other and causing damage or discolouration.

Shelf dividers can (obviously) be used on standard shelves too—you don’t need a bag rack for this solution.

Linen dust bags

If you’re lacking shelf space but have plenty of hanging space, linen dust bags are a good way to store handbags. You’ll be able to place each handbag into its own dust bag, and hang them from their own hanger, ensuring that they aren’t squashed on either side.

Linen dust bags will protect your precious handbags from dust, and because they’re porous, air circulates through them and prevents the build up of mould—a big problem for sealed plastic bags! The downside to using linen dust bags is not being able to identify the handbags inside them, which can be a pain if you’re in a hurry.

Hanging trays

If you happen to have wire shelves, you can purchase hanging trays made specifically for clutches and handbags, which hang directly below the shelves. The tray itself has compartments for each bag, allowing them to stand upright, and preventing them from touching each other. Hanging trays are a great use of vertical space.

Cubby holders

Another great bag organizer is a compartmentalised cubby holder, which sits up against the wall, and allows each bag to be upright and separated. These come in a range of shapes and sizes, allowing you to find the right product for your particular collection of handbags.

Tissue paper

If you have handbags that you don’t use for months at a time, it’s a good idea to stuff them with tissue paper, to help them hold their shape. If possible, use plain tissue paper rather than the coloured variety, as the ink can stain the inside of the bag.

You can also use other materials such as plain cloths or t-shirts for this, if needed.
